TOPEKA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae for several bodies of water.

Warnings have been issued for King Lake in Lyon County, as well as for Rooks County State Fishing Lake and Webster Lake in northwest Kansas. Several lakes have an algae bloom watch, including Eagle Lake in Bel Aire, Harvey County East Lake, Lovewell Lake in Jewell County, Marion Reservoir, and the Woodland Park Pond in Mt. Hope. Only one lake, Lake Shawnee in Topeka, has been lifted from the advisory.

A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. The KDHE says blooms can develop rapidly.

Avoid contact and keep pets away if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore.?Toxins can be absorbed through ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and skin contact.?Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure, but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you or your pets?come into contact with?algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water.?

Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, can be reported at kdhe.ks.gov/1163.
