WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - An arsonist set fire to a south Wichita wig shop and investigators need help identifying her.

Honey's Wig and Beauty Supply owner John Lee still can't believe what happened here.

Signs of a fire still show on the floor of his shop on south Hillside.

"The fire began to grow in size,” said John Lee. “So I tried to knock down the product and stamp it out, but it continued to grow and persist."

It happened on May 14 around 6:45 that night. The security video shows a woman walking around the shop taking things off the shelves. Then suddenly you see her set fire to hair pieces. Then she runs.

"It is pretty crazy that someone would do that,” said Lee. “She was trying to cause a distraction so she could steal the product."

Video shows Lee finally get a fire extinguisher and put out the fire.

Lee says one of his employees took the stolen items from the suspect before she ran out the door.

We showed long time customers the video.

"I feel bad for them,” said customer Tranita Deshazer. “I've been going here for years, and they are so sweet, so for someone to do that is just crazy."

Now, authorities need help identifying the suspect.

"Someone like this who is willing to walk into a local business while there are patrons in there, employees and try to set a blaze, definitely needs to be taken off the street,” said Crime Stoppers Coordinator Kris Gupilan.

The fire destroyed several hundred dollars worth of hair extensions.

Lee and his customers are just happy no one was hurt.

"Thankful my employee saw it,” said Lee. “That could have caused a lot of damage, so we were very very lucky."

"Someone could have died and lost their life just because she wanted to steal," said Deshazer.
