ALLEN, Kan. (KAKE) - Authorities in eastern Kansas say nearly 20 cows were euthanized after a cattle truck crashed on Monday. 

The accident happened just before 10 a.m. on U.S. 56 near Allen in Lyon County. The sheriff's office told KVOE that the 35-year-old driver tried to make a right turn onto Road K and the rear passenger side axle dropped into a ditch. A farmer tried to pull the rig out, but it ended up rolling onto its passenger side.

The truck was hauling 123 head of cattle, 19 of which were euthanized. The driver was not hurt.

The highway was shut down for about three hours.
