WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - With the Kansas State Legislature passing that Star Bond Bill, and sending it to Governor Laura Kelly's desk. It doesn't mean either the Chiefs or the Royals will move from Missouri to Kansas.

After Jackson County, Missouri voters rejected a new stadium for the Royals and a half-billion dollars for the Chiefs, Kansas politicians are moving closer to making Kansas an option for both franchises.

Kansas already has major league soccer and the Kansas Speedway for NASCAR. Yet the Star Bond could present an option for the Royals, who are on record that they will not play in Kauffman Stadium past 2031. The Chiefs are also considering all options.

Dr. Russell Arben Fox, from Friends University in Wichita, said this could also be a case of lawmakers wanting to say they were part of bringing an NFL or MLB team to Kansas.

“There's no indication that the chiefs or the royals are like saying, 'thank goodness they passed that because we don't know what we were going to do.' No, they have options still on the Missouri side. And then if they're actually looking for bids, they'll consider this one,” said Fox.

If a stadium did go up in Kansas for either team, the Star Bonds would pay for much of it. Along with other sources, including revenue from sports betting, which is legal in Kansas but not Missouri.
