WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police say one of two people who were shot during a Father's Day barbecue in north Wichita has died and a suspect is in jail.

Sedgwick County Jail records show 33-year-old Eric Gonzalez-Gutierrez was booked Monday morning for first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He's being held on $1 million bond.

Officers responded at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday to the report of a disturbance in the 1900 block of North Jackson. WPD spokesperson Andrew Ford said while gathering additional information, the dispatcher heard gunfire in the background.

Police arrived to find 28-year-old Aron Lara suffering form multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital where he died during surgery just before 10:30 p.m.

A second victim, a 22-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was taken by private vehicle to the hospital. He was stable Monday morning.

Ford said the shooting happened during a neighborhood Father's Day barbecue. According to preliminary reports, Lara had gotten into an argument with the suspect earlier in the evening.

The suspect "allegedly returned home, retrieved a rifle, and fired upon the victim, who was unarmed at the time of the shooting," Ford said.

Investigators believe two people with the victim returned fire, injuring the second victim.

Ford said the suspect was arrested and officers recovered the murder weapon from a nearby home. Authorities collected 26 shell casings of multiple calibers from various homes and vehicles in the vicinity.

"This tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of gun violence in our community," Chief of Police Joe Sullivan said. "Our thoughts are with the families affected by this senseless act of violence. The Wichita Police Department remains committed to thorough investigation and ensuring justice for the victim."

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call WPD at (316) 268-4407 or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.
