WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A GoFundMe set up last month to help the children of a woman who drowned has been taken down after concerns were raised over the woman's mother changing the title and description.

Sarah (Kanelakos) Ouellet passed away May 11 after she and her son became stranded in Grouse Creek east of Arkansas City, the Cowley County Sheriff's Office said. The boy was found clinging to a limb and taken to the hospital.

Soon after the accident, Sarah's mother, Kimberly, started a GoFundMe for the family titled "Sarah's legacy: a future for her children." The name and description were later changed and no longer mentioned the children being the beneficiaries.

Kimberly told KAKE News Thursday that the nearly $18,000 raised would go into a trust for the kids. However, when asked why she removed the kids from the GoFundMe and said the money was for expenses, she did not respond.

The fundraiser page had been taken down by Friday afternoon.

KAKE News reached out to a GoFundMe representative, who issued the following statement: “Our Trust & Safety team is in touch with the fundraiser organizer to help ensure funds safely reach the children and donor intentions are honored. Our top priority is protecting the generosity of our donors. The organizer opted to remove the fundraiser from the platform, as is their right to do at any time.”

Previous story:

"Sarah had went after him to protect him from drowning and ended up not coming up herself," said Daniel Ouellet.

Ouellet said he and his wife Sarah had been separated for about a year, but they were still raising their three young children.

On May 11th, Sarah was on a trip with the kids to Cowley County to see her dad when the unthinkable happened.

"They had played in the creek, they were swimming in the creek, Maddox had fallen in," Ouellet said.

Sarah jumped in to save her 10-year-old son and got stuck under the water. The Cowley County Sheriff's Office says first responders tried to revive Sarah, but it was too late. She sacrificed her life to save her son.

"All three of my kids actually witnessed that happen. And they struggle with that pretty heavily," said Ouellet.

Soon after the accident, Sarah's mother, Kimberly, started a GoFundMe for the family titled "Sarah's legacy: a future for her children."

In the description, it said in part, "Our biggest concern is her three children... We are asking to help set up a safety net for their future and any needs they may have in the present."

KAKE News shared the story, and knowing that the money was going directly to the grieving children, donations started coming in.

But Ouellet said after raising nearly $18,000 from more than 160 donors, something strange happened.

"It changed. All of it changed. It changed to 'we lost an amazing mother, sister, daughter, friend,' and everything that everybody had donated was now being donated for 'unexpected expenses' that had arose," Ouellet explained. "And she even went as far as to delete the little post where she had said thank you, we're on our way to our goal for the kids."

The GoFundMe title and description were completely different Thursday. It no longer said that the money was for the children, and Ouellet said some of the donors were upset.

"I've had several donors reach out to me. One of them was Maddox's teacher. There's an $800 donation from his teachers. That was for the kids. It was for them. They loved him. They wanted it to go to him to benefit him," Ouellet said.

Ouellet said he hasn't been able to get a hold of Sarah's mother to ask why she did it, but he just hopes she's not taking the money that so many people selflessly gave to help the three children.

"My ultimate goal is for them to get closure. For them to get the healing they need, and to get the support that they deserve," said Ouellet.

KAKE News contacted Sarah's mom to ask what she's doing with the money. She responded, saying that all the funds are going into a trust for the kids. However, when we asked why she removed the kids from the GoFundMe and said the money was for expenses, she did not respond.
