2 charged for acid attack on Wichita teen, another still sought

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Two women have been charged for allegedly attacking a 17-year-old girl with acid late last month.

The Sedgwick County court records show Ye'Kira Hollins and Tayronnia West, both 18, were each charged on Friday with one count of aggravated battery. 

Police say on May 26, Passion Turner had acid thrown on her face during an altercation in the 400 block of North Young on the city's west side. She later arrived at an area hospital with second-degree burns to her face and neck.

“As the Chief of Police, I want to make it unequivocally clear that our department has a zero-tolerance policy towards violence of any kind within our community,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said. “Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of every resident, and our entire agency is committed to taking all necessary actions to hold people accountable for violent actions such as these.”

Police are still searching for a 16-year-old female suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call WPD investigators at (316) 267-2111 or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111. 

Passion was expected to be out of the hospital soon, but her sister said last week that it's still going to be a long road ahead. She hopes telling Passion's story will help spread the word to end the violence.

"Go to school, do something different, travel, get a trade. There's so much more to life," she said. "And I understand that young people may not get that yet. They have to go through it. Some of them have to bump their heads. But just listen, just do something different."
