TOPEKA, Kan. (KAKE) - Efforts to bring the Kansas City Chiefs to Kansas has gathered support after Jackson County voters rejected an extension of a stadium sales tax that would have gone towards renovations at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs in Kansas City, Missouri.

KMBC reports that once the tax was rejected, the Kansas Legislature discussed a STAR Bonds proposal to build a new stadium to entice the Chiefs to move across state lines to Kansas City, Kansas.

In support of this, a website was created by Scoop and Score, Inc. to encourage Kansans to support the STAR Bond. On the website is a petition you can sign in support to show your support.

The website says, in part:

"The Professional Sports Franchise STAR Bond Project seizes a unique opportunity to elevate Kansas into a top-tier destination for professional sports. With the potential for a substantial return on investment without any new cost to taxpayers, it promises to be a game-changer for our state’s economy."

The Kansas Conference Committee on Senate and House Commerce started working on a bill, but it was not approved.

The special session begins on June 18.

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson and Speaker Dan Hawkins have sent a letter to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt asking him to consider collaborating with the state on a potential stadium project, and released this statement:

“The rich tradition and history of the Chiefs are beloved across the entire Kansas City region and throughout Kansas. The potential to establish a home for the Chiefs family here on the Kansas side of the state line is an opportunity that deserves a thorough conversation. We have reached out to the Chiefs organization and asked them to weigh in on the possibility of using Kansas’ unique STAR Bond funding tool and explore what that collaboration could hold. We’re excited that the Chiefs are open to this conversation and look forward to seeing what mutually beneficial opportunities might lie ahead for both the people of Kansas and the Chiefs franchise.”
