WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - For people that don’t have medical insurance, finding medical care can be unaffordable and sometimes impossible. That's why the Guadalupe Clinic opened up back in 1985.

“We serve the very very working poor, people who have absolutely no insurance of any kind and are living within 200% of the federal poverty level,” said JV Johnston, executive director of Guadalupe Clinic.

The clinic has two locations in Wichita to serve those that need it the most. They even have a vision clinic where they gave out nearly 1,000 pairs of glasses in 2023. It is run almost entirely by 88 medical volunteers who donate their time for the greater good.

In fact, the Guadalupe Clinic had 10,453 patient visits across both locations just last year.

Thursday night kicks off the 29th annual Midwest Winefest. Walkabout is an exciting night of wine tasting and snacking right in downtown Wichita. The best part? All the proceeds go directly to Guadalupe's Clinic and its mission.

“Walkabout is a marvelous event. This year we have more stops than ever. We have 22 stops where people will get two ounces of wine plus an appetizer from each restaurant or area,” said Johnston.

Some of the restaurants featured at Walkabout include Bocatto Eatery and Pasta, Larkspur, and Sabor Latin Bar and Grille.

Many of the businesses are excited for the chance to talk with folks that might not know about their establishments and help the good cause.

“It’s fun to do it and it's a great feeling to help the community and help the people,” said Melad Stephan, Sabor owner.

“This establishment has been here for over 30 years, we’ve always been a part of the community. We do everything we can to help everyone,” said James Chesisk, Larkspur owner.

Winefest has already sold more than 800 tickets but don’t worry, there will be plenty of wine. About 528 bottles to be exact.

“So people should come thirsty and if they drink too much definitely get an Uber,” said Johnston.
