WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police say a deadly shooting in south Wichita earlier this month has been ruled justifiable homicide. 

The shooting happened April 9 in the 2600 block of South Emporia. A Wichita Police Department spokesperson said on April 24 that the case had been presented to the district attorney's office and has since been cleared as justifiable.

Counts of first-degree murder and marijuana possession were dismissed without prejudice, Sedgwick County Jail records show. The man, Damarqua Edwards, is still in custody for aggravated robbery in connection to an incident in December 2023, as well as contempt of court.

Wichita police say a suspect has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting on the city's south side. 

Sedgwick County Jail records show the 19-year-old suspect was booked early Wednesday for first-degree murder and possession of marijuana.

Officers responded just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Emporia, which is southeast of Pawnee and Broadway. While officers were en route, 911 received multiple reports of shots fired at the same location. 

Lt. Aaron Moses said officers arrived to find 19-year-old Dontis Carter with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention from officers, EMS and fire department personnel, Carter died at the scene.

"Here we are again," Police Chief Joe Sullivan said at the scene. "We got a family that's devastated. This is a needless and senseless act of violence, something that should've been settled with a conversation. Instead, it resulted in gunshots."

Lt. Moses said officers and investigators were able to identify the suspect, who was arrested following a traffic stop near his home.

"Preliminary information suggests that it was a targeted incident, as the suspect and the victim were acquainted and engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting," Moses said. 

The suspect was also jailed for aggravated robbery in connection to an incident at a business in the 1900 block of East Pawnee on December 20, 2023.
