Local leaders this week will begin showing off the design plans for Wichita’s new downtown baseball stadium, promising a game-changing venue that will serve both Triple-A baseball and the community for decades.

Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell, other local officials and representatives of the design-build team led by JE Dunn Construction Group Inc. provided the WBJ with an early look at the design.

It's a design that will begin becoming a reality soon, as work on the $75 million project is expected to begin next month.

Longwell says the design will go before the Wichita City Council for final approval Feb. 12, with plans for a groundbreaking ceremony for the yet-to-be-named stadium the next day.

That will kick off an aggressive construction schedule that is expected to wrap up in March of next year to allow for events to begin at the new facility in April 2020. That includes the Triple-A team that will play its 2019 season in New Orleans.

In addition to unveiling the plans at the city's design council meeting Wednesday morning, the plans will also be shown later in the day to the Delano Neighborhood Association.

Materials and colors used throughout the park were intentionally designed to reflect its surrounding neighborhood.
