Wednesday morning, yellow school buses will fill Wichita’s roadways. Student First bus drivers have been out since last week on dry-runs to get familiar with the routes for the first day of school.

Training Center Manager Renee Boydo said, “The safety for these children is everyone's responsibility. We want to make sure these kids get to and from school safely.”

Even on those test-runs drivers have noticed violators passing the stop signs.

"That's something here in Wichita we see on a daily basis," Boydo said. We like to remind motorists to make sure you maintain a very safe distance behind the school buses.”

Here's what motorists should look out for: the yellow lights indicate they are about to slow down. When the red lights come on and the stop comes out that means they are loading and unloading children.

Remember, it's illegal to pass a bus when its stop sign is out, even on big roadways with no medians

She said, “When there is no median, and even on four-way streets, all four lanes have to stop.”

Bus drivers are urging motorists to make sure they keep a safe distance away for the bus.

"Ten feet around the bus is honestly the most dangerous spot for children so we do teach our kids to stay 10 giant steps away from the bus when they are loading and unloading.”
