The newest and possibly largest addition to Sedgwick County Park is starting to take shape.

The ‘Sedgwick County Art Park’ is located in the far southeast sections of the park and there will be five large interactive pieces of art.

“I think they are going to love it,” said local artist Terry Corbett. “We have had a really positive reaction to this so far.”

Corbett is designing one of the pieces of art called the ‘Turtle Maze’. At 60 yards long and 35 yards wide, the ‘turtle’ covers a large area and is the first piece of the five to take shape.

“It basically has to do with natural themes, its made of natural materials, it is in a natural setting,” Corbett said of the collection.

The Turtle Maze is keeping to its name, looking down from the sky, the piece of art looks like a cut out of a turtle. All around the turtle are going to be winding sidewalks that lead to another set of sidewalks elevated onto 'shell' of the Turtle Maze.

Different artists are designing the four other pieces. There is going to be a large 3D model of a fish fossil, multiple totem poles, an Inukshuk family and several rock sculptures that resemble buffalo scattered through prairie grass. All of these pieces of art are designed to be used for fun and learning.

The project is expected to cost $400,000 from design to completion Corbett says that the project is being funded through private donations.

“No county taxpayer dollars,” he said. “We don't have the money for the rest of it, but we have patrons and possibilities.”

The Turtle Maze is expected to be done before April 2018. The remainder of the park is awaiting funds to be installed.
